Family

This still life series came about as I sought to unravel the complexities of growing up in my alcoholic home.

Each image is a “family portrait” symbolized by an assemblage of natural materials & objects, representing me, my four siblings and parents.

The childhood loss of nurturing & protection left me feeling betrayed, insecure, relationally naive & indecisive, while the toxic environment cultivated fear, lack of trust & anger; all of which accompanied me into adulthood.

Wanting resolution, I painfully milked my memories for a new perspective of the past

I realized, slowly, that my parents tried their best. They were in survival mode, while raising five children, as they grappled with the wretchedness of alcohol-related issues.
Yet, they strived lovingly to care for their children.

With this awareness, the light came through the cracks.
I traded resentment for compassion.
I said good-by to the past.

Through the magic of time & forgiveness, I was free to be “me”.

There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.
